The white trillium is Ontario’s provincial flower. I have seen a lot of trilliums in my time but never a purple one. I saw this one amongst several hundred white ones while walking along the Speed river near Guelph. I wonder if they are rare?

That is a Wake-robin (scientific name: Trillium erectum, but also known as Birthroot or Purple Trillium or Red Trillium). One of the give aways is that it smells kinda bad.
It isn’t as common as Trillium grandiflorum (the Large-flowered Trillium which is our provincial flower) but it isn’t all that rare. I have one in my back yard actually.
