Binge Watching

I started binge-watching Seinfeld a few days ago and I’m wondering how far I’ll get. There are nine seasons and if the past is any indication, I might get through all of Season 2.

I just don’t understand the whole binge-watching thing, I’m not very good at it. I’ve tried Breaking Bad, Orange is the New Black, Homeland, Penny Dreadful, Star Trek Deep Space Nine, Cheers and Curb your Enthusiasm. I haven’t finished a single one of those series.

I got through two seasons of Breaking Bad, the first six episodes of Orange is the New Black and Homeland, three episodes of Penny Dreadful and the first episode of Star Trek DS9. I’m currently half way through season two of Seinfeld. My all time favourite show, Cheers, lasted four episodes. Curb your Enthusiasm a bit longer.

Binge-watching is defined on Wikipedia this way:

Binge-watching, also called binge-viewing, is the practice of watching television for longer time spans than usual, usually of a single television show.

By that definition I’ll never join the binge community.

Wiki goes on to say:

This practice began in the 1980s and is still popular among subscription television outlets in the 2010s.

The 1980s! Really?? I was around in the 1980’s and there was no binge-watching going on that I know of. VCR’s were big in the 80’s but TV series were not something people rented. In fact, nobody went to that section of video store until the good or even bad movies were all gone.

With all that said, I do have some successes under my belt; Game of Thrones and The Borgias. Both kept my attention long enough to complete the series or in the case of Game of Thrones, get caught up. Could have been the sex… not sure.

I guess I’m not a binge watcher, unless there is sex involved… very shallow of me.

I feel like I’ve failed at, what’s got to be, one of the easiest thing to do.
