I was looking for a simple editor to work on my blogs offline. Hopefully helping with my commitment to blogging in 2015. The WordPress editor is OK but requires access and patience.
I started researching available ‘editors’ for my Mac. I realized quickly that there were text editors geared towards bloggers and my search moved in a new direction. Some were easy to find; MarsEdit, Blogo, Qumana and Ecto. (the latter two were not available on the App store so were removed from this short review). Others were a bit more of a challenge; like Desk.
It’s interesting to note that I found features I wasn’t even looking for in the above offerings; mainly the ability work offline then sync to WordPress (and many other hosts).
I tend to make decisions based on the tried and tested, ‘spur of the moment’ method. I don’t like to spend too much time on research… I gave it a day. My reviews are just as short.
The criteria I set for myself were:
- Look & Feel
- Ease of Use
- WordPress integration
- Community/Actively being updated??
I’ll cover each of the editors above, that were available on the App Store, using these criteria and give you my decision in a later post. I have already made my decision but didn’t want you scrolling to the bottom for the spoiler 🙂
MarsEdit ($39.99/3.5 stars) is undoubtedly the most popular and easiest to find in the App Store. You can actually download a 30-day free trial from their website. The look and feel of the app was good, not pretty but definitely easy to use and integrate with WordPress. Took only a few minutes to be up and running. There is an active blog for this product and the most recent version 3.6.7 was updated on November 13th, 2014.
Blogo ($29.99/3 stars) is another popular editor and one I took a really good look at. The look and feel of this app was great! But there is no free trial to really put it through it’s paces. Reviews from others are mixed at this time. WordPress integration included with the added benefit of ‘real previews’ using your theme. There is a blog but not so active with the most recent post teasing you with a discount from Black Friday 2014. A Google+ community is also available. The most recent version 2.1 was updated on December 12th, 2014.
Desk ($29.99/?? stars) is the last App to be reviewed. While there were insufficient reviews to display any ‘star’ ratings the App did receive “Best App of 2014” by Apple. Once again, there is no free trial so certain assumptions will have to be made for the look and feel category. The App looks very pleasing to the eye and it’s simplicity is sure to excite both the casual or frequent blogger. WordPress (and many others) integration is included. There is a very active blog and Google+ community for this product with the most recent posts being yesterday! The most recent version 1.1 was updated on December 29th, 2014.
Part II of this post will speak to my decision and why.
