Time for Blogs?

How much time do you devote to reading blogs? Maybe a better question is how much time can you devote to them? Do you set aside a specific time of the day? Do you randomly search the blogosphere for just the right story?

Ever since the beginning of the year, when I started taking my own writing seriously (again), I’ve thought about time. There is only so much of it… we all have busy lives, constantly juggling or sometimes fumbling between family and work. At the end of the day though, you have to take time for yourself. How you use that time is up to you.

I love to read, I read a lot.

I read about thirty books a year on average, see my Goodreads feed here. However, I’m looking for something different when reading blogs. Something much, much shorter. Something that captures my attention quick and lets me move on to something else. It’s almost like I have Attention Deficit Disorder when it comes to reading blogs, same thing happens while watching TV sometimes… I just can’t get into it.

My tips on what types of blogs to read and where:

  • While waiting in line at the grocery store read a quick post that makes you laugh. It’s better than reflecting on other people’s eating habits, or your own. Here’s an example: Passive-Aggressive Notes.
  • While waiting for your Doctor to call you in for that annual checkup there are the blogs that make you think. These are generally a little longer. Lets face it, whatever you are going in there for won’t be pleasant and you really need to get your mind someplace else. A good example is The Positivity Blog.
  • Save the really long, deep, soul-searching blogs for those really long lineups waiting to get on that new roller-coaster at your favourite theme park. Unfortunately I have no examples of this genre… I simply don’t read them. I avoid those lines instead.

I read somewhere that the perfect blog post has around 2000 words! Obviously I’ve never read the perfect blog post as I lose interest around the 500 mark. I wonder what I’m missing?

This post has 365 words, one for every day.

  1. Love those tips on the types of blogs that you read! I usually just scroll through Twitter when I’m out and about, waiting in lines.

I’m not a huge book reader. I only read books on the rare occasion that I discover a new great nonfiction book related to self-help and personal development in the field of business and marketing.

The rest of the time I read blogs… a lot of them! Sometimes I even read blogs while I’m trying to watch TV but I end up ignoring the TV to focus on the blog content. I don’t have one specific favorite blog genre. I’d read everything from entertainment, humor, and fashion to business, tech and politics. It all depends on what draws my interest at that given time. Sometimes 150-word posts make me lose interest and other times I can read a 3000-word blog post without looking away. It all depends on my mood and whether or not I have the time to read it.

This post was a pretty fun read. Thanks for sharing it!

  2. An outstanding share! I have just forwarded this onto a
colleague who had been conducting a little
research on this. And he actually bought me dinner simply because I stumbled upon it for him…
lol. So let me reword this…. Thanks for the meal!!
But yeah, thanks for spending the time to talk about this topic here on your website.
